am I ready for oDesk?

I’m pooped. I just finished building (or trying to) my profile in order to be more visible to different buyers.

oDesk is sort of a marketplace for freelance jobs wherein buyers (companies, employers) and providers (employees) meet and transact business. There are a range of services that are available.

I actually signed up for an account some time in December of last year, but I never got to set up my resume, portfolio, skills, etc. cause I felt that it was too tiring.

However, one of my readers, Faith, commented in this blog that I should try it out. After a couple of emails, I was encouraged to start filling in those blank sheets and taking some exams to be noticed more.

So now I’m a bit drained from overthinking and from the energy I used up. But upon realizing the amount of income Faith earned (around $1000 ) in her first month, I know this will all be worth it. She’s a nursing student by the way which is also something to be amazed about because she doesn’t have any formal training with computers since she’s more trained in the medical field.

The only problem I have right now is how to find those buyers and how to start the oDesk tool. Also, I need to find TIME. I’ll be done with school 2 weeks from now so it’s something I’m really looking forward to this summer. I plan to take up a number of activities and this is on top of my list.

  1. Hi Ed, thanks for mentioning moi..

I’ve seen your profile and by the looks of it, you’re ready to take on jobs. So start applying for job postings and have a whole lot of patience in waiting for responses. If ever you get rejected, do not feel downhearted. It’s a normal thing to get rejected when you still don’t have any work history or background on oDesk.

I’m here all the way so don’t hesitate to contact me.

    Good luck!

  2. Faith: no prob, you’ve been very helpful in informing me on the things i need to do. do you have some tips on what type of jobs i need to apply for? hourly or fixed? or are they the same when it comes to using up time in the odesk tool?

  3. Well, hourly jobs are quite stable since you can avoid problems with the buyer once you log time properly using odesk team tool. Fixed price on the other hand necessitates you tot rust your buyer that he will pay you at the end of the project.

If you apply for hourly jobs, start at a lower rate. For fixed price, choose a buyer who has a good background, excellent history in working with providers and outstanding feedback. If possible, do not request any upfront payment as this lowers your chances of getting hired because buyers prefer those who do kinda like a “pro bono”.

You can visit the forums and see what other people have to advise new members. The forum is quite helpful especially for those who are just starting out.

  4. I see, so if I apply for jobs that have fixed prices, do I still need to log in the odesk tool? Sorry, I pretty much need a refresher. hehe.

  5. I’ve long been oDesk ready but I never got to starting it out. lol.
